Mandy Seley

Curtailed!!!

This is a page you must see!

"It's a piece for my sister and my brother-in-law, they've been wanting a picture from me that they could hang in their home. They loved going to the cherry blossom festival in DC when they lived in the area, and featured them on their wedding stationery, so I thought it would be a nice theme for a portrait-style image of them, as their respective favorite critters.

Technically it was a pretty fun piece since I got more practice using my airbrush on the background! Most of it is done in Copic markers, with some glitter pen accents on the blossoms themselves. They don't really show up in the scan but in person, there's a little bit of sparkle, and I knew Becky would like that."

David Lisle / Artist

Finally a portrait photograph of 'Badi Uzzaman,' an actor from India. We were just under the peak of Mount Waddington on the Coast Range of British Columbia working on a feature film. Badi was one of the actors I dressed daily while we were shooting. One of my best photographic portraits, 1990.

Brush Strokes Fine Art Restoration

Restoration

"This oil painting has been cherished since we were small children, and it has significant sentimental value beyond its modest purchase price. It was damaged over twenty years ago by a door falling on it, leaving two bad gouges and several deep scratches. Additionally, some paint had also flaked off due to age and dryness. We had not been able to enjoy it for all that time, and were uncertain if it could be repaired and who we could trust to perform the restoration. Anabela Ferguson, the artist who restored our painting, was successful beyond our expectations. She took the time to do the job correctly and is very skilled in color matching and canvas repair. There are no signs of the gouges or scratches. The damaged areas have been restored perfectly, in both color and texture, and the new frame complements the painting very well. Anabela is a very gifted artist and has extended her artistic talent to art restoration. We are thrilled that we'll be able to enjoy this painting for many years now, and will be able to pass it along to our children. " (author not mentioned)

Anabela Ferguson and Amazon Experience

Signed up with Amazon as a buyer and seller a few years ago. Today I bought some canvas in roll, and applied for a tax exempt for my business. The writing of the enclosed agreement said it would take 24 hours, but it came in less than 20 min.s Amazing. I am finding so much of my supplies through them. I don't have to drive 10-25 miles a day to get it anymore. Go Amazon!!!
I also heard that in a few months Amazon was going to deliver by air within 30 mins. of your transaction. They may become the next Santa in my home.

Anabela Ferguson Watercolor Mixed Media

Painting 2004-2005

I got this powerful mixed media painting from Anabela at one of her exhibits back in 2004 or 2005. What struck me was the wildness, the stormy seas and bright-streaked sky and the sense of movement. For me, the birds became dragons winging across the dark, dangerous ocean, with the sunrise lighting their way home. Imagine my surprise when my practical husband was equally moved by it and decided we must have it!
Such is the power and beauty of Anabela's work. He sees birds, I see dragons, and we both love the way it graces our living room space." L.B.

Oil on Wood

Priming with Gesso
Anabela Ferguson

This oil painting on a wood surface was finished
recently.  I wanted to show this piece to you to tell you that some
oils can be painted in different surfaces.  For oil paint
to bond to the surface you must add an acrylic or water based
medium.  Oil paints carry linseed oils and they need a strong
medium to bond.  Once the paint has been added and time has been allowed for drying,
give it a firm and thick coat of a reversible damar gloss finish.
The beauty of priming this piece with gesso is to give those areas like the sky and the water a true texture of nature.

Anabela Springfield Virginia Framer

Custom Framing Discounts
Anabela Ferguson      Owner/Artist/Framer/Fine Art Restorer & Conservator

I spent sometime this  past week researching how galleries and custom framing shop have been able to survive the coupon and discounted framing at point of sale in this economy.  As I compared one of the framing and gallery shops to the prices my custom framing studio and mobile gallery/frame shop provided to clients and collectors ordering for the first time.  I realized that during the years I have kept my prices at a very low. I don’t offer coupons or discounts.  I want to offer everyone the opportunity to own a piece of my collection for their home or office, not necessarily for less.  Most of you know, that my prices are and always have been very reasonable.  I read a comment from a gallery owner in GA and explained exactly how they charge for their framing jobs; “We stay at 100%-500% mark ups on all open edition prints and 200%-800% on custom framing (200% on glass and mats, 800% on molding).  Our prices are much lower than any other frame shop in town through, including large chains like Michaels. One way to keep profits in the gallery has been to do as much work in-house as possible.  Because we do all on site, we cut out the middle man in a lot of different aspects”.   So for example, I took a 16 X 20 of a mid level cost frame and figured you would need 7.5’ with 2” wide.  If their cost for bulk length is $1.89/ft, then 7.5X1.89 plus the chop and join will be costing the customer  $5.51 / ft. = 41.32 X 800%=$330.60.  That is how the framing business works.  This is why so many of you wonder why framing is so expensive.  Wow!!, I realized that my prices have always bitten the market altogether.  My framing for posters and photos are way below what most galleries start at with a small job, $79.95.  Then if they order an exclusive print of any of my work on canvas or paper,  starts at $39.00/online/or by phone.  However, I don’t buy bulk like all framing and gallery owners, so my cost is always hire than their inventory cost.  I don’t have a middle man that does cutting for me except for my wholesale store, they chop and join my frames to precision with their miter saw; “I work in my gallery, and I do not add saw particles on my unfinished pieces or restoration pieces, I prefer for that to be done somewhere else”.  However, my prices are still lower than everyone around me.  Clients that know of my skills have learned to appreciate my prices, and one or two have asked for discount in the past two years on a higher end job for custom framing or fine art restoration and framing together.  I have always offered 300% mark up of my wholesale cost for anything new coming to me to have framed.  If you choose to change a frame on one of my pieces, I trade the cost of the frame the painting is on, and will calculate the difference between the new one and the old one.  Regarding mats and glass; I charge 125%-200% of my cost while other framing companies are taking 400% from their cost.  I want for my customers to value my work and not remember me as a framer but as an artist that will also be flexible enough to provide the custom framing in addition to original works of art.  www.anabela-artist.com                 May 2013.

DECORATING HOME

From a Special Young Artist

“BEAUTIFUL ART”

“I think art is a great way to express emotion. It is so relaxing in so many ways, and it helps reduce stress. I love having artwork in my home, because it adds unique dimension to some plain, boring spaces. It brightens up a room immediately, and gives off a sophisticated feel that can make rooms with neutral colors glow”.                                             SB

Photography Restoration and Advertisement

I had an old family photo of my fathers family.  The photo included my father his brothers and sisters and my grandmother and grandfather.  The photo had numerous cracks and the face of my uncle who was an infant was so cracked you could not even see his face.  It was the only photo of my grandmother that i had and she just passed so i wanted to get the photo restored and framed.
Member Comments:
